The GRUA tournaments and camps are played at local Universities (with turf fields) and local High School fields.
A typical GRUA season runs from spring (May) to fall (October).

2024 Junior Umpire Camp
In partnership with Grand Rapids Umpire Alliance (GRUA), we would like to invite you to participate in a comprehensive 6 week beginners umpire training program.
Who: Any 13-18 year old regardless of experience.
What: 6-week beginners’ program where you will learn rules, philosophy, positioning and mechanics that will prepare you for the upcoming season.
When: Sundays 4-7pm
(Starting Feb 18th - March 24th)
Where: West Catholic High School

Cost: $150 per student
What else: Students will receive GRUA adjustable hats along with BATL polo umpire shirt that can be used in place of the traditional umpire shirt.
About the lead instructor: Nick Sweeney will be entering his 29th year umpiring baseball. He attended Jim Evans professional umpire academy in 2005 and worked 2 years in organized professional baseball. He has 23 years of experience at every level of college baseball. He retired from full time umpiring two years ago to spend more time with his four young children. His passion lies now with helping to develop the next generation of umpires. He is an instructor at the Bruce Doane’s two and three umpire camps that are held locally at Davenport University in the fall as well as the West Michigan Umpire Association and Algoma LL in the spring.

Umpires shall wear a navy blue or black polo-style shirts with red and white or white sleeve and collar stripes, gray slacks and a navy or black cap. All other articles of clothing (i.e., turtleneck, undershirt, jacket or plate coat) shall be navy blue or black. The ball bag(s) shall be either gray, navy blue, or black A navy blue or black umpire cap is required. The belt and socks shall be solid black. Shoes black or black with white logos. OPTIONAL: Umpires may also wear a powder blue polo-style shirt with navy and white sleeve and collar stripes as long as ALL members wearing a shirt wear the same color. Accessories – Equipment such as masks, indicators and brushes can be of any color. Gloves (if worn) shall be black.
